Epic Symphonic Bombast Metal und England das waren bislang Kombinationen die selten genannt wurden! Mit den Newcomern MEMORIES OF OLD soll sich genau das ändern, denn man möchte zur Speerspitze des genannten Genres aufsteigen und ins Rampenlicht treten!
Die Band bringt dieser Tage ihr erstes Album auf den Markt und das war für uns natürlich Grund genug mal mit dem Bandchef Billy Jeffs ein Gespräch zu suchen und uns über die Band, die Geschichte und die englische Metallandschaft zu unterhalten.
J.P: Hallo Billy. vielen Dank das du mir ein paar Fragen zu eurem neuen Album und zu euch selbst als Band beantwortest. Da euch viele Leute bestimmt noch nicht kennen, stell dich und die Band doch einfach mal kurz vor und gib uns einen kurzen Überblick über eure Bandgeschichte?
B.J: Hallo mein Name ist Billy Jeffs. MEMORIES OF OLD ist eine Epic Power Metal Band aus Großbritannien. Ich habe die Band als Solo Projekt gegründet, um einfach die Art der Musik zu machen die ich einfach liebe. Es passte teilweise einfach zu meiner damaligen Band NIGHTMARE WORLD.
Wie auch immer, irgendwann stellte ich fest das MEMORIES OF OLD als Soloprojekt nicht mehr zu stemmen war, deshalb beschloss ich daraus eine komplette Band zu machen, was uns dann zur heutigen Konstellation gebracht hat.
J.P: Eure Bandzusammensetzung wirft eine große Frage auf! Wie habt ihr es geschafft das mit Tommy Johansson ein absolut vielbeschäftigter und bekannter Musiker/Sänger auf eurem Album mitwirkt?
B.J: Der Kontakt zu Tommy entstand direkt in den Anfangstagen von MEMORIES OF OLD als ich begann das Konzept zu „The Zeramin Game“ zu entwickeln und mein eigenes Power Metal Album zu schreiben. Ich war immer ein großer Fan von Tommy und seiner Arbeit und er war eine große Inspiration für mich.
Eines Tages entschloss ich mich ihn einfach auf Facebook zu kontaktieren um zu zeigen was ich bislang erarbeitet hatte und ich schickte ihm daher eine Nachricht mit einem kurzen Videoclip. Ich erwartete eigentlich keine große Antwort, für mich war es schon Erfolg genug das ich mit einem meiner größten Vorbilder meine Musik geteilt hatte.
Aber, eine Woche später, ich war gerade auf dem Heimweg, bekam ich eine Nachricht auf mein Smartphone von Tommy! Ich glaube mein Herzschlag setze darauf hin kurz aus. Sofort fuhr ich an den Rand um herauszufinden was in der Nachricht stand.
Er hatte mir eine lange Nachricht geschickt indem er meine Arbeit lobte und wie sehr man doch die Einflüsse heraushören würde. Es würde ihn freuen auf dem Album zu singen, aber leider wäre er aktuell sehr beschäftigt.
Und ich dachte mir dann okay, jetzt oder nie und schrieb ihm zurück das das Ganze gar keine Eile hat und ich einfach nur stolz und glücklich wäre wenn er in die Band einsteigen würde und den Gesangsposten übernehmen würde!
Danach tauschten wir uns immer wieder aus, wurden Freunde und organisierten alles so das Tommy Zeit hatte für seine Gesangsaufnahmen und so ein Mitglied von MEMORIES OF OLD zu werden.
J.P: Anschlussfrage zu Tommy, die sich ja leider etwas aufdrängt. Aufgrund seiner Auslastung mit SABATON und seiner eigenen Band, glaubst du er schafft es sich die Zeit auch für MEMORIES OF OLD in der Zukunft zu nehmen?
B.J: Wir haben genau über diesen Punkt natürlich gesprochen und klar das ist eine große Herausforderung, besonders weil er ja Teil von SABATON was ihm einfach viel Zeit kostet. Aber ich denke wir bekommen das mit einer guten Planung schon hin.
Auf der anderen Seite ist auch klar sollten wir einfach ein gutes Angebot oder Möglichkeit bekommen live zu spielen und Tommy nicht verfügbar sein, werden wir jemand finden der ihn dort dann ersetzt.
So ist es ja auch gewesen als wir unsere erste Show auf dem Power Metal Quest Fest gespielt haben.
Das würde übrigens auch für jeden von uns gelten. Die Show muss einfach weiter gehen. Aber natürlich versuchen wir es immer möglich zu machen das Tommy immer dabei ist.
J.P: Gehen wir nun mal etwas näher auf euer Debütalbum ein. Kannst du uns etwas über den Aufnahmeprozess sagen? Von wann bis wann habt ihr daran gearbeitet? Erzähl uns bitte noch etwas über die Lyrics auf dem Album.
B.J: Der Aufnahmeprozess begann eigentlich als wir uns entschieden „The Land of Xia“ aufzunehmen und als unsere erste Single zu veröffentlichen. Zwischenzeitlich wollten wir dann weiter am Rest des Albums arbeiten.
Ich schreib also weiter am Album, ging ins Studio und legte den Grundstein dafür das das komplette Album Gestalt annahm, was in unserer zweiten Single „Zera`s Shadow“ mündete.
Das Konzept zum Album war übrigens ein Traum von mir den ich hatte als ich auf meinem Boot auf dem Grand Union Canal eingeschlafen bin. Als ich erwachtet hatte ich noch alles im Kopf, die Geschichte, die Charakter, einfach alles. Also nahm ich schnell Zettel und Stift und schrieb alles auf an was ich mich noch erinnern konnte.
Ich wollte eigentlich auch ein Buch über die ganze Geschichte schreiben, aber es stellte sich nach einem Kapitel heraus das das nicht wirklich eine Stärke von mir ist und so verwarft ich die Idee wieder.
Also nahm ich meine Aufzeichnungen dann und setze diese dann für unsere Debütalbum. Es war irgendwie eine sehr logische und natürliche Entscheidung zum Schluss.
J.P: Wie würdest du euren Stil beschreiben? Ich denke mal Epic Bombast Power Metal trifft es am Besten oder? Etwas ungewöhnlich für eine britische Band oder?
B.J: Vollkommen korrekt was du sagst! Und ja für dieses Genre ist unser Land nicht wirklich bekannt.
Der Power Metal ist eher in so Ländern wie Deutschland, Finnland oder Schweden durch so Bands wie BLIND GUARDIAN, STRATOVARIUS oder HAMMERFALL groß geworden.
Großbritannien ist da eher für den klassischen Heavy Metal bekannt, wie er z.B. von BLACK SABBATH praktiziert wird. Aber es gibt hier auch eine starke Power Metal Szene mit vielen Fans und tollen Bands.
J.P: Gehen wir mal auf ein paar Songs ein. Für mich sind „The Land of Xia“, „Some Day Soon”, “Across the Seas” und “The Zeramin Game” die hervorstechenden Songs. Willst du uns über diese ein bisschen was erzählen? Hast du eigentlich auch irgendwelche Favoriten auf dem Album?
B.J: Es ist immer schwer eigene Favoriten auszusuchen wo man doch so hart an den Songs gearbeitet hat. Aber ich denke wenn ich einen Favoriten wählen müsste, wäre das der Titeltrack „The Zeramin Game“.
Dieser ist für mich sehr speziell da er einen guten Überblick über unser Konzept ist und er auch einige musikalische Veränderungen im Laufe der Zeit durch gemacht hat.
Ich habe mir immer vorgestellt wie es ist das Album live als eine Art Show aufzuführen, daher gibt es bei diesem Song auch ein theatralisches Ende welches das Album gut abschließt und so etwas wie das „Fallen des Vorhangs“ ist.
Natürlich ist auch „The Land of Xia“ ein sehr besonderer Track, da er der erste Song war der den Fans präsentiert wurde und den ich Tommy gezeigt hatte.
„Across the Seas“ ist ebenfalls ein sehr spezieller Track für mich da er irgendwie das Schwarze Schaf unter den Songs war, denn irgendwie gefiel er mir nie so richtig und ich wollte immer wieder dies und jenes daran ändern.
Schlussendlich als er fertig war wurde ein Song der absolut überzeugte und sehr gut bei unseren Fans ankam!
J.P: Eine Frage zur Labelsituation. Ihr habt ja vor kurzem einen Vertrag bei Limb Music unterschrieben, wie kam der Kontakt zu Stande? Seid ihr froh bei einem so etablierten deutschen Label gelandet zu sein?
B.J: Wir sind total froh das wir beim Limb Music unterschrieben haben! Ein Label was viel für meine Lieblingsbands wie z.B. RHAPSODY getan hat in der Vergangenheit und welches einfach eine gewichtige Rolle im Power Metal spielt.
Wir sind mit der Wahl absolut zufrieden.
Während der Albumproduktion hat man uns immer unterstützt und viel für uns getan. Wir blicken wirklich sehr zuversichtlich in die Zukunft und auf die Arbeiten an unserem zweiten Album mit ihnen!
J.P: Werfen wir doch mal einen Blick auf die britische Metalszene. Wie ist denn bei euch so die Szene? Gibt es ordentlich Nachwuchs und gibt es genug Möglichkeiten aufzutreten und euch Publikum zu zeigen?
B.J: Wie ich schon zuvor erwähnte ist die Metalszene generell hier bei uns sehr stark und auch die Power Metalszene wächst nach und nach was uns natürlich zu Gute kommt. Zum Beispiel gibt es da die Band FELLOWSHIP, eine großartige Band die eine tolle Debüt EP veröffentlich haben. Mit ihnen würden wir auf jeden Fall gerne man auf Tour geht.
Aber natürlich ist auch eine große Priorität von uns einfach im Rest von Europa bekannt zu werden.
J.P: Bei eurer Stilausrichtung kommt natürlich gleich die Frage ob ihr privat auch auf Fantasy steht? Gibt es da im Buch oder Filmbereich irgendwelche Lieblinge?
B.J: Leider muss ich gestehen dass ich kein großer Fantasy Fan bin! Das dürfte jetzt ziemlich viele überraschen, aber irgendwie war das nie so meins. Die Ausnahme ist hier Harry Potter!
Was ich aber sagen muss ist das ich ein großer Star Wars Fan bin und definitiv hat mich die Story sowie die Filmmusik sehr beeinflusst beim Schreiben unseres Debütalbum.
Aber am meisten haben mich einfach auch die Bands beeinflusst mit denen ich aufgewachsen bin. DREAM THEATER, MEGADETH, HAMMERFALL, FREEDOM CALL und REINXEED um nur einige zu nennen.
J.P: Billy wie geht es denn jetzt genau bei MEMORIES OF OLD weiter? Was steht bei dir selbst als nächstes an? Habt ihr schon Ideen fürs nächste Album?
B.J: Ich habe bereits einige Ideen für unser nächstes Album welche wir hoffentlich bald angehen werden. Dieses Mal wird es mehr eine gesamte Bandarbeiten werden als das Solo Ding nachdem wir unser Lineup gefunden haben.
Aktuell arbeite ich an meinem eigenen Studio wo wir planen viel von unserem zweiten Album zu schreiben und aufzunehmen.
Wir nehmen uns auf jeden Fall die Zeit die wir benötigt um etwas ganz Großes zu erschaffen.
Natürlich müssen wir auch aktuell mit der ganzen COVID 19 Geschichte umgehen und ich denke das nächste was für uns anstehen wird ist es live zu spielen, wenn wir es wieder dürfen!
J.P: Vielen Dank Billy für deine Zeit und die interessanten Antworten im Zuge dieses Interview! Ich wünsche euch alles Gute für die Zukunft, die letzten Worte gehören natürlich dir.
B.J: Das Einzige was ich sagen möchte ist ein großes Dankeschön an unseren treuen Fans da draußen die uns in den letzten Jahren so unterstützt haben! Ohne euch wäre dieses Album nicht das geworden was es geworden ist! Einfach unglaublich was aus 2 Songs geworden ist.
Also vielen vielen Dank und wir können es nicht erwarten wenn wir uns endlich sehen können bei einer Liveshow und wir endlich wieder auf Tour gehen können!

J.P: Hi Billy it’s me Julian from Rock-Garage.com is speaking. Thank you for answering a few questions about your new album and MEMORIES OF OLD itself. For those people who did not know you, can you introduce the band first and show the previous career?
B.J: Hi! My name is Billy Jeffs and Memories Of Old is an epic power metal band from right here in the UK. I started this band as a solo project originally, simply as a creative outlet to write the music I love, which sometimes didn’t fit with my band at the time, NightMare World.
However after things started to develop, it soon became clear to me that I would be doing Memories Of Old a disservice if I didn’t develop it into a full band, so that’s what happened and what led us to where we are today.
J.P: One question comes in my mind when i read your line up. How did you get in contact with Tommy Johansson? He is very busy with SABATON and his own band, so how could you convince him to be a part of MEMORIES OF OLD?
B.J: My contact with Tommy began back in the early days, just after I started to compile my ideas for ‘The Zeramin Game’ with the intent of finally writing and recording my own power metal album. I have been a big fan of Tommy for many years, and he has always been a big inspiration for my music and songwriting.
So, one day I decided that I wanted to show him what I was working on, and send him a message on Facebook alongside a short clip of the start of The Land of Xia, which I was writing at the time. I didn’t really expect a reply or anything, but it was nice to know that I had at least shared my music with one of my biggest inspirations.
Anyway, about a week later, I’m on the road driving home, and I get a notification pop up on my phone that read ‘Tommy Johansson has sent you a message’, and honestly I think my heart skipped a beat, so I immediately pulled over to see what it said.
Basically he sent me a long message praising the music and mentioned he could hear his influence there, and at the end of the message, he mentioned it would be great to sing on the album if he weren’t so busy, and I think at that moment I thought “well, this has to happen!”, so I told him there is no rush, and that it would be an honour if we could make it work.
We carried on talking after that and gradually became good friends, and we managed to work it out so that Tommy could perform for the album and be a full member of Memories Of Old.
J.P: So, did you expect that Tommy has the time in the future to be the singer of MEMORIES OF OLD? I think it will be difficult for him to set the time slots for all of his bands.
B.J: We have spoken about this before, and of course this will be a challenge, especially with such a big name as Sabaton requiring most of Tommy’s time, but I think we can make it work with some careful planning.
On the flip side of course, if an opportunity comes up for us and Tommy is occupied with Sabaton or Majestica already, I think I can safely say that we will still go ahead one way or another, and likely get someone to stand in for Tommy, which is what we did with our first show last year at Power Metal Quest Fest.
It would be exactly the same if any of the rest of us couldn’t play for one reason or another, the show must always go on and it will, but of course we will do our very best to be sure we can perform with Tommy whenever possible if he is available.
J.P: Let us look now closer at your debut album. Can you tell us about the recording process? From when to when you’ve worked? Tell us something about the lyrical story.
B.J: The recording process started when we began working on The Land of Xia, which we planned to record and release as our first single just to get our name out there while we proceeded to work on the rest of the album.
Following that, I continued writing the rest of the album and visiting the studio to lay the groundwork for the rest of the album moving forward, which led to our second single Zera’s Shadow.
In regards to the story of the album, it’s a bizarre but true story how the idea came to me. I was sleeping on a boat on the Grand Union Canal here in the UK, and when I woke up I remembered this very vivid dream, a whole story, characters, setting and everything, so I immediately grabbed a pen and paper and started to write down everything I could recall.
The story in that dream was ‘The Zeramin Game’, of course I filled in a few gaps so that it fully made sense and was interesting from beginning to end, and my original plan for this was to write a book, which I actually did start doing. But after one chapter it became clear that writing a book wasn’t my strongest area, so I put the idea on the shelf, however I never forgot it.
Fast forward to when I started writing a power metal album, I needed something for the lyrics, and telling this story through a concept album just seemed like a very natural decision.
J.P: How would you describe your music style? I guess Epic Bombast Power Metal makes it the best right? Not so typical for a british band, or?
B.J: That sounds about right! And certainly it is a genre that this country is not known for, though I would say that is something that goes back to the early bands that paved the way here and in other countries around the world.
Power metal was never big here in the early days, since it was born in places like Germany, Finland and Sweden with bands like Blind Guardian, Stratovarius, HammerFall and others, while the UK was always leaning towards a more straightforward heavy metal approach, as it the roots here with bands such as Black Sabbath. But there is still a strong power metal scene here, with many dedicated fans and some great bands flying the flag for the genre.
J.P: Let us look at the songs. For me The Land of Xia“, „Some Day Soon”, “Across the Seas” and “The Zeramin Game” are the best songs. Can you tell us something about these songs? Are these also your favorite songs on the album?
B.J: It’s always been hard for me to pick a favourite song from the album, since it works best as a whole, listened to from start to end in one sitting. But I would have to say if I must pick a favourite it would be the title track, ‘The Zeramin Game’.
This track is really a special one since it is the culmination and big final climax of the story, it goes through a lot of changes musically as it progresses and features possibly some of Tommy’s best performances on the entire album. I always felt this album as a stage show and wanted to present it as such, so at the end of this track you have a very theatrical finish which just closes off the whole album perfectly before you listen to ‘Finale’, which then serves as the ‘curtain call’ or ‘end credits’ style track.
Of course though, The Land of Xia is a track that is close to my heart as well, since it was the first one I finished writing, the one that led to Tommy’s involvement, and also the track that introduced most people to us and in a lot of ways still does.
Across The Seas was always an interesting one, during the writing process it was always the black sheep of the songs in a manner of speaking, I was never fully sure about it, and always wanted to change parts here or there, so for a long time it got put on the bench while I was working on finishing the other songs. A great irony since once it did get finished it turned into a real standout track on the album and one that has been very well received by all out fans since the release.
J.P: A question to the label situation. You are now under contract by Limb Music an established label in germany. How satisfied are you with your label choice? How did the contact works?
B.J: We are very happy to be signed with Limb, as a label that has done great things for some of my own favourite bands in the past, such as Rhapsody or Adagio for example, and for being known well for presenting a strong presence of power metal, it was certainly a choice we are very satisfied with.
Over the course of the album’s production, Limb have been very supportive and really have done a lot for us, and we are really looking forward to working on our second album alongside them.
J.P: So, let`s have a look at your metal scene. How is the british metal scene? Are there enough young musicians and are there enough opportunities to act and show you to the public?
B.J: There is certainly a strong metal scene in this country, and as I mentioned earlier the power metal scene has definitely carved out it’s slice quite nicely, so the opportunities for us here are pretty good. Take for example a new upcoming band, Fellowship, these guys recently released their debut EP and it is fantastic, certainly a band we would be very happy to tour with. That said, there is no denying that the power metal scene is a lot bigger across the rest of Europe than here, so getting ourselves out there is a big priority.
J.P: Depend on your music style, of course, the question came if you like fantasy in your private life too? Are there any book or movie favorites?
B.J: In all honesty, I’m not a big fan of fantasy in general as it happens, which might come as a surprise I know, but it’s never really been my thing, aside from maybe Harry Potter. I have to say there are a few influences to mention though, in particular I am a huge fan of Star Wars, and there is no doubt that the storytelling there must have had at least some influence on ‘The Zeramin Game’, even though they are very different things, and the soundtrack to those films and as I mentioned, the Harry Potter films, among others, are certainly present in the music I write.
But for the most part the music is influenced by the bands I have listened to as I have grown and developed as a musician, including Dream Theater, Megadeth, HammerFall, Freedom Call and of course, ReinXeed.
J.P: Billy what comes next for MEMORIES OF OLD? What’s next for yourself? Have you already ideas for the next record?
B.J: I have a lot of ideas for our next album already, yeah, this is something we are very much looking forward to starting, and will certainly be more of a combined band effort and less of a solo thing now that we have an established line-up.
I am actually working at the moment on the construction of our own studio, which is where we are planning to write and record a lot of our second album, so that should be something really great once it’s ready, and will give us a dedicated space to work in as well.
Other than that, we are just monitoring the COVID situation around the world like I’m sure all bands and artists are, since getting out on the road is certainly the next big thing we really need to do, but of course we can’t do that just yet.
J.P: Thank you Billy for your time, and for the interesting answers! I wish you all the best for the future, the last words, of course are yours.
B.J: Thank you. The only other thing I need to say really is just a huge thank you to all of our dedicated fans from all over the world, without you all this album would not have been possible, and the amount of patience you have shown over the last few years has been incredible. Sticking by us with only 2 songs for the most part to listen to is truly wonderful, and it means the world to us.
